Это слово возникло в середине XIX в. и относится ко всему, что может вызвать взрыв смеха или вопль отчаяния. Сейчас оно широко используется, обозначая грубейшую или глупейшую ошибку, «перл», например, когда путают одинаковые по звучанию слова (Tibetan llamas — тибетские гуанако вместо Tibetan lamas — тибетские ламы), или похожие по звучанию слова (a virago of lies вместо a farrago of lies), или в идиомах (If this is your first visit to our country, you are welcome to it. — Если это первое посещение нашей страны, делайте с ней, что хотите, вместо you are welcome — добро пожаловать), или в неправильно построенных предложениях (a specialist in women and other diseases — специалист по женщинам и другим болезням — о гинекологе). Многие простые и более распространённые ошибки — howlers — часто встречаются в школьных сочинениях и известны под названием schoolboy howlers (ошибки школьника), хотя, без сомнения, многие школьницы делают те же ошибки: The king wore a gown trimmed with vermin (ermin). — Король носил мантию, отделанную паразитом (горностаем). Portia had a casket with a picture of her inside (containing her picture). — У Порции была шкатулка с фотографией её внутренностей (с её фотографией). Contralto is a low kind of music sung by ladies (music using the lower notes in the register). — Контральто — это низкий вид музыки, исполняемый женщинами (голос, звучащий в нижнем регистре).
